Brain Radiosurgery

Brain Radiosurgery (aka Brain SRS) is a way to treat both benign and malignant brain tumors in a effective, safe, and non-invasive fasion. Brain SRS is an excellent option for treating brain metastases. Brain SRS is associated with excellent tumor control with superior quality of life (When compared with conventional treatments). We are pleased to offer this advanced, patient-friendly approach for the majority of our patients who have brain metastases.

BrainLAB iPlan and Exactrac are integrated hardware and software packages specifically designed by BrainLAB, a German company that has emerged as major innovator in advancing radiation therapy.

BrainLAB allows us to very accurately deliver high-dose radiation to a target with a very high degree of precision. The system that we most commonly use is frameless, so that patients can be treated quickly and without an added procedure to affix the headframe into the skull.

Exactrac allows continuous, real time imaging that allows us to account for tumor motion during and over the course of radiation treatments. Exactrac Image-Guided Radiation Therapy allows a patient to be positioned to within sub-millimeter accuracy, and the treatment to be only delivered when the patient and the target are within the radiation field.

Other uses for brain SRS are for malignant brain tumors, especially recurrences such as gliomas or astrocytomas, or benign brain tumors such as pituitary adenomas or acoustic neuromas.

Brain radiosurgery is also used to treat pain syndromes such as trigeminal neuralgia or functional conditions such as essential tremor.
